The Meaning of “Ullambana”
Ullambana means “deliverance from suffering” and specifically refers to the salvation of anguished beings. This concept originates from the Buddhist legend of “Maudgalyayana (Moginlin or Mogganalla) saving his Mother from the realm of pain and suffering.” Hence, the Ullambana.
What is the “Ullambana Festival”?
Ullambana Festival is also called Sangha Day, or the Buddha’s joyful day. The origins of Ullambana and Making Offerings to the Sangha are that the Buddhist laity offers a meal to the Buddha and the Sangha as an act of reverence.
It is also Filial Piety Month, as named by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, founder of Fo Guang Shan according to the Buddha’s discipline. His principle for Sangha offering is to give offerings annually instead of one meal, for a community rather than a few people, and for the future rather than the present.
By making offerings to the Sangha, one may cultivate merits and practice filial piety by dedicating the merits to their parents, ancestors and all sentient beings.
