This month’s Sangha Gathering will present highlights from the transformational teachings that Sogyal Rinpoche gave in Myall Lakes in 2014.These teachings on the nature of mind contain extraordinarily clear advice about how to apply our realization to work with our attitudes and overcome our habitual tendencies. Rinpoche shows us with great skill and compassion how to distinguish between the nature of mind and our ordinary, deluded mind. He also explains how we can gradually learn to remain in the essence of mind rather than return to our confused, samsaric mind.
Please join us in person at 158 Australia St, Newtown to make the most of your time with our community of practitioners.
For those unable to join in person, the day will be offered online through this Zoom link.
In 2024, our Sangha Gatherings will present material from The Way of the Great Perfection, the latest cycle of the All-Encompassing Path to Enlightenment.
We really look forward to seeing you in person or online.

Learn to meditate with this beginners course, covering the basics of meditation. Attendees will learn different types of meditation through guided meditations, talks, and personal guidance. Find out how meditation helps reduce stress, develop focus and calmness in the mind, deal with difficult emotions and negative thinking, and bring greater clarity and joy to your life.
About the Presenters:
Ven. Miao Hui (Sister Sophia) is a Buddhist nun, having ordained in 2003. She resides at the Chan Miao Zen Centre in Penrose. She is widely travelled, and has practiced in all the three major Buddhist traditions: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. She has practiced in Taiwan, China, India, Myanmar, India, and Sri Lanka. She met her teacher Ven. Jian Meng, from the Mahayana Zen tradition when she was recovering from poor health. He showed her a way to recover from her poor health in both the mind and body. She has spent years deepening her mediation practice and despite all the different lineages of Buddhist traditions, she has found they are all common in their ability to deeply transform our lives and liberate us from the illusions of the mind that binds us to suffering.
Tina Ng is the Founder and President of the Metta Centre, and also the Principal Solicitor of Metta Legal, a law firm that deals with cases relating to family law, child protection, property, civil litigation and guardianship matters. She is an accredited mediator at Metta Resolution, which provides mediation, training and coaching to resolve conflict in the community and within families. Tina is a Buddhist Chaplain at the Western Sydney University. Tina has a keen interested in supporting the youth, and has run various mentoring programs through her business and social projects. She has organised various events, has played the role of coordinator, emcee, and auctioneer at charity functions. She has shared the Buddha’s teachings in conferences, talks, workshops, and in her writings.

The Buddha praised the mastery of instruction over the mastery of psychic power and the mastery of telepathy because it leads to noble attainment and culminates in complete liberation. Lay people received gradual instructions from the Buddha and attained the fruit of stream entry and more. Now more than 2,500 years after the parinibbāna of the Buddha, if we have faith or conviction in the Buddha, incline towards understanding the Buddha’s gradual instructions and diligently practice in accordance with them, we can still expect wonderful results. In this Dhamma session we will examine the Buddha’s gradual instructions from the Pali Canon and why they are so valuable and powerful.

A regular group has been attending the Drop-in Meditation sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For those who have not yet attended these sessions, they provide a simple relaxing experience of settling the mind and do not require previous experience of meditation or pre-booking. Just drop in and enjoy!
One change from 1 July on is that Drop-in Meditation will no longer take place on Sundays. A reminder that Medicine Buddha healing meditation sessions, which are growing in popularity, are held on the third Thursday of the month, this month on Thursday 20 July.
If you think you could benefit from a soothing meditation session, then please feel welcome to attend one of these sessions in July.

Event Details
This 3-night meditation retreat allows practitioners to settle into stillness and quiet. The retreat becomes a supportive environment to go deeper into meditation than is typically possible with the busyness and complexities of daily life. The beautiful, serene environment allows space for cultivating awareness and equanimity and for exploring the mind.
The goal of the retreat is to provide an environment where all students can receive the required support and instructions to help them move forward in their practice.
This is a student-centred retreat, which means that there is no set curriculum to follow but rather each student will continue their own meditation practice and all talks and interviews will be responsive to students’ needs and interests. Instructions on meditation techniques will be provided as required and all levels of experience are welcome. If you are unsure about suitability you can speak with the teacher prior to the retreat.
Teacher: Kynan Tan is a meditation teacher who takes a collaborative approach to helping students achieve their meditation goals. He draws upon a number of different modern and traditional techniques of contemplative and introspective practice. He is a longtime practitioner of the stages of śamatha-vipassanā (as presented in the book The Mind Illuminated), Rob Burbea’s insight meditation techniques, nondual awareness, and brahmavihārā practices (mettā, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity).
Cost: $335–$450, covering accommodation and all vegan meals. Early bird prices are available until 20 December. As in the Buddhist tradition, there will be an opportunity to offer the teacher a donation (dāna or generosity) after the retreat.

In this retreat, we will engage in meditations on the conventional nature of our mind to develop meditative concentration (or shamtha), with emphasis on the cultivation of the qualities of spaciousness, bliss and stillness. Then we will explore the ultimate nature of the mind to develop insight (or vipassana), with emphasis on investigating the relationship between awareness and thoughts.
The retreat will include guided and silent meditations, with explanations on the practice and time for Q&A or discussion.
We are excited to be offering a residential option for this retreat
