Thich Nhat Hanh
This silent retreat is an invitation to take the lived body as the path of awakening. This is not the body we objectify, judge or identify with, or have ambivalent feelings about, it is the natural wisdom unfolding when we fully immerse mindfulness in the body. This, the Buddha said, leads to ‘whatever skilful qualities are on the side of clear knowing’.
Sometimes meditators skip over the importance of awareness in the body, perhaps through misunderstanding, anxiety or aversion. In this retreat somatic practices will be integrated as part of our meditation. Somatic practices aid nervous system regulation and help unwind deeply held tensions and habituated patterns of reactivity. They help develop the ‘felt sense’, or interoceptive awareness, enabling a more grounded capacity to ease difficult and painful emotions and thoughts and supporting a more open-hearted engagement with life. As the bodymind settles into wholeness and awareness clarifies, the more subtle aspects of embodiment will reveal themselves transforming our usual perceptions of self and world.
The program will consist of lying down, sitting and walking, regular guided meditation, dharma talks, occasional relational meditation and regular somatic practice sessions. These will include working with the breath, unwinding movement and yoga, and TRE (Trauma Release Exercise).

In our busy, hectic lives carving out five days to rest deeply in meditation practice and the transformative power of the Buddha’s teachings is not always easy.
We’re delighted to announce that we have opened bookings for our October urban retreat so that you have the best opportunity to reserve that time. (Those of you in NSW, Queensland and South Australia can take advantage of the long weekend in those states.)
We warmly invite you to spend five days immersing yourself in the Tibetan Buddhist wisdom tradition.
Join us in our Buddhist temple by the park, or online to:
- establish or deepen your daily meditation practice
- learn how to work with distractions and obstacles that may arise during your practice
- hear, contemplate and meditate on the essence of the Buddha’s teachings
- create space to experience genuine inner peace and contentment
- begin a lasting transformation of your life
You will be supported by experienced meditation teachers Jan van der Breggen and Marianne Gizycki, and receive video teachings from Sogyal Rinpoche, a renowned master of the Tibetan Nyingma lineage and Dzogchen, or “Great Perfection”, tradition. The Dzogchen approach cuts to the essence of Buddha’s teachings to shows us who we really are: clear, wise, and fundamentally good.
Each day, which will run from 9:30am to 5:00pm, will feature a rich yet spacious program of teachings, guided meditation, and time for reflection and discussion.
We strongly encourage you to join us in person at Rigpa Sydney (158 Australia St, Newtown) to get the most out of your retreat time, but an online option is available if you cannot get to Sydney.

Event Details
Samādhi is a pāli word that is sometimes translated as concentration, but might be better understood as collecting, unifying, aligning, stabilising, and harmonising both mind and body. The Buddha gave extensive teachings on how to cultivate samādhi and the importance of this practice. Through cultivating samādhi there are beautiful, lovely, and powerful states of mind that foster deep feelings of tranquility, happiness, and wellbeing. These qualities of mind also create optimal conditions for gaining insight and learning about your own mind and experience.
These states are a possibility for all human beings and can be accessed and cultivated through practice. There is a fine art involved in navigating the mind that requires creativity, exploration, play, and responsiveness.
Each day there will be teachings given on the techniques for cultivating samādhi, working with the hindrances, finding a balanced approach to practise, and how to deepen the practice and explore avenues for insight. These instructions will centre around using the breath as a meditation object, whole body awareness, and the practice of mettā.

This 8-week course is an opportunity for you to gain a deep understanding of the foundations of mindfulness, specifically through the lens of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness as taught in the Satipatthana Sutta. In addition to these ancient teachings, you will learn to integrate contemporary wisdom practices into your daily life.
Throughout the course, you’ll acquire tools for developing compassion toward yourself and others, learn to skilfully engage with difficult emotions and situations, and cultivate a kinder and wiser relationship with yourself and the world around you.
Whether you are just beginning your mindfulness practice or wish to deepen it further, this eight-week course will provide you with the techniques and tools to weave mindfulness into your everyday experiences—at work, at home, in family life, and on the meditation cushion.
Each week will focus on a different aspect of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, while also incorporating modern practices. You’ll receive guided meditations, reflective inquiry, journaling exercises, and home practices designed to keep you engaged and motivated throughout the course.
