Tibetan Buddhism is unique among all forms of Buddhism in the world, as it is the only one that contains the complete teachings of the Buddha, encompassing the Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana paths.

Over centuries of careful acquisition, starting from the decline of Buddhism in India around the 7th century CE, Buddhism became the official religion of The Land of Snows (Tibet). It was formally consolidated by notable Indian Buddhist scholars and practitioners such as, Shantarakshita, Padmasambhava, and Jowo Atisha. Over time, four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism emerged: the Nyingmapa, the Kagyupa, the Sakyapa, and the Gelugpa. All four schools follow the collected teachings of the Buddha known as the Kangyur, in addition to the scholastic commentaries or treatises known as the Tengyur, which supplement the Buddha’s teachings.  As an indication of its uniqueness, many of the texts in the Tengyur were lost in their original languages but were preserved in Tibetan.

The talk presented here will focus on the practical aspects of how Tibetan Buddhism can be applied in our daily lives: our place in our family, the role of our career in our life, our participation in society, the acknowledgement of universal responsibility, and ultimately our place in the universe as defined by our compassion and love.

By clearly understanding what we need to adopt and what we need to abandon, we can slowly begin to navigate through the confusion of what it means to be a caring person living in a seemingly “unfeeling” world. Buddhism offers us the opportunity to see where we have come from, who we are at the present moment, and, importantly, where we are going from here.

Tibetan Buddhism offers us the opportunity to learn important facets about ourselves. Regardless of the religious faith we have been born into or the cultural tradition we may identify with, Buddhism can introduce us to who we are and provide us with a glimpse ultimately into who we can be.

This 6-week course introduces the practice of Buddhist Mindfulness Meditation, also known as Vipassana Meditation, which is based on the teachings of the Buddha contained within the Discourse on the Establishment of Mindfulness (Satipatthana Sutta). The course integrates both theoretical and experiential aspects of the practice (sitting meditation and walking meditation).

The course is led by Buddhist teacher Jim Teoh, who draws from the Satipatthana Sutta and his almost 40 years of personal meditation experience.

Because it condenses all the exoteric sūtra scriptures into a meditation manual that is easy to understand, scholars and practitioners rely on its authoritative presentation as a gateway that leads to a full understanding of the Buddha’s teachings.

Tsong-kha-pa took great pains to base his insights on classical Indian Buddhist literature, illustrating his points with classical citations as well as with sayings of the masters of the earlier Kadampa tradition. In this way the text demonstrates clearly how Tibetan Buddhism carefully preserved and developed the Indian Buddhist traditions.

This first of three volumes covers all the practices that are prerequisite for developing the spirit of enlightenment (bodhicitta).

In our busy, hectic lives carving out five days to rest deeply in meditation practice and the transformative power of the Buddha’s teachings is not always easy.

This series of Saturday afternoon sessions offer an introduction to meditation and practical advice from some of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist teachers of our age. Applying these teachings can help us meet the challenges of these difficult times, to heal ourselves, and to bring us to the core of our own peace, compassion and wisdom.

Samādhi is a pāli word that is sometimes translated as concentration, but might be better understood as collecting, unifying, aligning, stabilising, and harmonising both mind and body. The Buddha gave extensive teachings on how to cultivate samādhi and the importance of this practice. Through cultivating samādhi there are beautiful, lovely, and powerful states of mind that foster deep feelings of tranquility, happiness, and wellbeing. These qualities of mind also create optimal conditions for gaining insight and learning about your own mind and experience.

These states are a possibility for all human beings and can be accessed and cultivated through practice. There is a fine art involved in navigating the mind that requires creativity, exploration, play, and responsiveness.

Each day there will be teachings given on the techniques for cultivating samādhi, working with the hindrances, finding a balanced approach to practise, and how to deepen the practice and explore avenues for insight. These instructions will centre around using the breath as a meditation object, whole body awareness, and the practice of mettā.

Teacher: Kynan Tan a meditation teacher who takes a collaborative approach to helping students achieve their meditation goals. He draws upon a number of different modern and traditional techniques of contemplative and introspective practice. Kynan studies meditation with Dr. Tucker Peck, leads retreats, and teaches one-on-one instruction and online meditation courses.

This 6-week course introduces the practice of Buddhist Mindfulness Meditation, also known as Vipassana Meditation, which is based on the teachings of the Buddha contained within the Discourse on the Establishment of Mindfulness (Satipatthana Sutta). The course integrates both theoretical and experiential aspects of the practice (sitting meditation and walking meditation).

The course is led by Buddhist teacher Jim Teoh, who draws from the Satipatthana Sutta and his almost 40 years of personal meditation experience.

The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Tib. Lam rim chen mo) is one of the brightest jewels in the world’s treasury of sacred literature. The author, Tsong-kha-pa, completed it in 1402, and it soon became one of the most renowned works of spiritual practice and philosophy in the world of Tibetan Buddhism. Because it condenses all the exoteric sūtra scriptures into a meditation manual that is easy to understand, scholars and practitioners rely on its authoritative presentation as a gateway that leads to a full understanding of the Buddha’s teachings.

Tsong-kha-pa took great pains to base his insights on classical Indian Buddhist literature, illustrating his points with classical citations as well as with sayings of the masters of the earlier Kadampa tradition. In this way the text demonstrates clearly how Tibetan Buddhism carefully preserved and developed the Indian Buddhist traditions.

This first of three volumes covers all the practices that are prerequisite for developing the spirit of enlightenment (bodhicitta).

This module of Inspiring a Revolution in Your Heart and Mind provides an introduction to the Tibetan Buddhist compassion practices with a particular focus on loving kindness practice. Meditating on loving kindness can help us restore our love and confidence, and heal unresolved emotional wounds. It also puts us back in touch with the fundamental goodness of our core being, and once that has happened, we are able to love ourselves and others.

3. Patience: not being perturbed by anything.

4. Diligence: finding joy in what is virtuous, positive or wholesome.

5. Meditative concentration: not being distracted.

6. Wisdom: the perfect discrimination of all knowable things.

These are known as the Six Paramitas, or transcendent perfections and contain all the vital skills needed for us to transform our mind and open our heart.

This ten-week course addresses each of the Six Paramitas in turn, offering a wealth of practical advice to help us put our best biggest heart into action everyday.
