OVERVIEW
The Buddhist Council of New South Wales is the only body recognised by the Department of Education and Training for accreditation of SRE teachers in New South Wales. Each teacher must sign a declaration that they are free from any convictions for child molestation, assault or drug offences.
Our Special Religious Education Programme covers schools throughout New South Wales, but they are mainly located in the Sydney metropolitan area.
Our guidelines for teachers request that if meditation is taught during the lessons, that it be restricted to mindfulness of breathing (Anapanasati) or Loving Kindness (Metta Bhavana). On no account should any meditation techniques involving visualisations be taught to young people.
All teachers must be aware of the welfare of the children and, as the Buddhist Council of NSW is the responsible body for what is taught, teachers must not teach advanced techniques to immature students.
