SOURCES OF FUNDS

The Buddhist Council of New South Wales depends for its existence on the financial support of its member organisations and donations from the community.

Our funding comes from:

    • Membership renewal (by donation)
    • Proceeds from our donation boxes placed at our premises and at external events
    • Donations from member organisations and the general public to our general fund for our operating expenses
    • Tax deductible donations to our Education Fund
    • Donations from chaplains who receive a partial subsidy from selected hospitals and who choose to donate some, or all, of this partial subsidy to the Buddhist Council of NSW to cover the operating costs of the chaplaincy program.

Our operating budget is approximately $50,000 p.a. of which, approximately 70% goes towards rent and utilities, which works out at approximately $100 per day.

It is important that we provide what our members need and to properly represent Buddhism in the general community.  Only in this way will we justify the donations and support we receive. If we remain focused on serving the Dharma, we have the confidence that we will be supported. If you have any advice or suggestions about how we can do our work better, please call us or email us.

Value for Money

More than 100 hours of volunteer time is spent per week for the operation of the Buddhist Council of New South Wales. This 100 hours-per-week does not include the volunteer effort in hospitals, prisons and schools. If this 100 hours-per-week is costed at $15 per hour (the rate we used to pay for casual employees) this equates to $1,500 per week or $78,000 p.a. Perhaps the best way to evaluate the effectiveness of the $50,000 cash budget and the $78,000 worth of unpaid staffing, is to look at whether the Buddhist Council of New South Wales is achieving its three-part mission. If you have feedback or suggestions, please tell us what you think.
